William C. Evans, son of James T. and Rachel Evans EVANS, was born on Jones Island, now known as, Jane's Island or "Old Island, Somerset Co. MD on 6 December 1841 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). William, James T. EVANS’ child, resided with James "Upper House", on Tangier Island, VA in about 1844 (Walczyk, Gail M, Report and Journal of Proceedings of The Joint Commission to Adjust The Boundary of the States of Maryland and Virginia; Deposition of Witnessess (Unknown; Coram, NY: Peter's Row, 1992), p 10 (hereafter cited as Walcyzk, Gail M., Deposition). He married Sarah "Emily" Evans circa 1862. Emily was born on Rhodes Point MD, in 1840 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). She was the daughter of William EVANS and Maria Evans EVANS. Emily was listed in the household of William EVANS on the 1850 Census in Somerset Co, MD. In John EVANS will on 9 October 1851 in Somerset Co, MD, Emily was named as an heir. It was probated 5 February 1852 (Dryden, Ruth T., Will Book 1837-1859). Evans 23, Sarah Emily 22, Angie N. 6, Phoebe E. 4, John W. S. 2." William died on 22 December 1879. Interment was in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Ibid.).

She married William Mitchell EVANS on 23 April 1882 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 148). William was born in Somerset County, MD Smith's Island MD in 1860 (Dryden, Ruth T., Cemeteries of Somerset County Maryland (Westminster MD: Family Line Publications, 1989), p 54 (hereafter cited as Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset Cemeteries). He was the son of Solomon Snead and Ruth E. Marshall EVANS. William died in 1947. He was interred at Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Ibid., p 54).

In 1884 Phoebe and William Mitchell EVANS had Effie EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). On 9 October 1885 Phoebe and William Mitchell EVANS had John EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid.). Circa April 1890 Phoebe and William Mitchell EVANS had Walter EVANS in Somerset County, MD. Circa September 1892 Phoebe and William Mitchell EVANS had Ella EVANS in Somerset County, MD. Circa 1894 Phoebe and William Mitchell EVANS had Edward S. EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1920 Census, p 214). Phoebe, and William's daughter Effie married Walter MITTIN circa 1902. Circa 1909 Phoebe and William Mitchell EVANS had Cordie EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid., p 214). Phoebe died in 1931. She was interred at Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton).

3 iii. Sadie Jane EVANS was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1867. Sadie was listed as a niece in Benjamin F. MARSH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.

4 iv. John W. S. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 16 January 1868 (Ibid.). John was listed in the household of William C. EVANS on the 1870 Census in Somerset Co, MD (Barnes, John C., Somerset 1870 Census). John was listed as a grandson in James T. EVANS's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. STEWART H. EVANS

Stewart H. Evans, son of Elijah P. EVANS and Matilda EVANS, was born in 1840 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). Stewart was listed in the household of Elijah P. EVANS on the 1850 Census in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1850 Census). Stewart was listed in the household of Elijah P. EVANS in the 1860 Census in Somerset County, MD.

He married Mary Ann Evans circa 1863. It was undocumented. Mary was born on Jones Island, now known as, Jane's Island or "Old Island, Somerset Co. MD on 26 February 1837 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). She was the daughter of James T. and Rachel Evans EVANS. Mary was listed in the household of James T. EVANS on the 1850 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Scherzinger, Patricia, Accomack 1850 Census). Mary was listed in the household of James T. Stewart and Mary Ann Evans were living in Household Smith's Island Houshold #56. An abstract reads: "Stewart H. Evans 30, Mary Matilda 34, Arinthia J. 5, Rachel M. 4, Lambert 3, Mary A. 1."

Stewart was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. An abstract reads: Stewart H. Evans 37, sailor, Mary A. 43 wife, Arinthia J. 15 daughter, Rachel M. 14 daughter, Lambert A. 12 son, at school, Mary O. 10 daughter, at school, Edward H. 6 son, at school, Lybrant T. 4 son. At one time it was the practice of some oyster dredgers to shanghai immigrants and avoid due wages. "On 29 December 1892, the McLane entered the Potomac River, and Marshal Biddleman seized the oyster sloop Partnership and arrested Captain Stewart H. Evans and three negro mates and fined them $200.00 each. For two months evans and his crew had held their crew of fourteen captive; when rescued the immigrants were overjoyed and embraced and kissed each other." Wennersten, John R. The Oyster Wars, p 63.)

He married Sinah HOFFMAN on 25 December 1899 in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 148). Stewart H. Evans, widower age 55 to Lena Ellen Bradshaw, widow age 46 on 25 December 1899. Sinah was known as "Lena".

Sinah was born circa 1854. She was the daughter of John W. and Eliza Jane Marshall HOFFMAN She first married Thomas W. BRADSHAW on 25 May 1875 in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 47).

Stewart was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Somerset County, MD (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith, p 24).

Stewart H. and Mary Ann Evans EVANS had the following children:

1 i. Arinthia Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1865. Arinthia was listed in the household of Stewart H. EVANS on the 1870 Census in Somerset County, MD. Arinthia was listed as a daughter in Stewart H. EVANS household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. She married John Lewis BRADSHAW on 6 July 1881 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 47). John was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 9 April 1860 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). NOTE: In Families of Smith's Island, Leslie Dryden stated that this John L. was the son of Benjamin H. and Eliza Bradshaw and not the son of William H. and Maranda. It is clearly stated in the Baptism Records of Antoch that this John L. In a John Lewis and the son of William H. and Maranda. Dryden notes on page 8 that William H. and Maranda did have a son, John L. but does not have any information on his. The conclusion is that the John L., born 9 April 1860 and died 16 November 1895 is the son of William H. and Maranda Evans Bradshaw, that he married Arinthia Evans and had the children noted. He was the son of William H. BRADSHAW and Maranda EVANS. John died on 16 November 1895. Interment was in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Ibid.).

Circa 1886 Arinthia and John Lewis BRADSHAW had Lambert Bain BRADSHAW on Smith's Island, Maryland (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith, p 5). Circa 1888 Arinthia and John Lewis BRADSHAW had William S. BRADSHAW on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid.). Circa 1889 Arinthia and John Lewis BRADSHAW had Alma BRADSHAW on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid.).

2 ii. Rachel M. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1866. Rachel was listed in the household of Stewart H. EVANS on the 1870 Census in Somerset County, MD. Rachel was listed as a granddaughter in James T. EVANS's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. Rachel was listed as a daughter in Stewart H. EVANS's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. In April 1884 Rachel and John Pardy BRADSHAW had Fannie BRADSHAW on Smith's Island, Maryland (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith.).

She married John Pardy BRADSHAW on 16 April 1884 in Somerset County, MD. John was born on Smith's Island, Maryland before 28 May 1861 (Miller, Rebecca F., Antioch Church, p 1). He was the son of David A. and Sallie A. Marshall BRADSHAW .

He married Symphony BRADSHAW circa 1898. it was undocumented (Ibid.). Symphony was born in Smith's Island MD in December 1881 (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith.). She was the daughter of Thomas W. and Sinah Hoffman BRADSHAW.

4 iv. Mary A. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland in September 1869. Mary was listed in the household of Stewart H. EVANS on the 1870 Census in Somerset County, MD. Mary was listed as a daughter in Stewart H. EVANS's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.

She married John Cooper MARSHALL on 25 May 1886 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 289). John was born on Smith's Island, Maryland in 1864 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). He was the son of John W. and Julia Ann Tyler MARSHALL. John died in 1954. 5 v. Edward H. EVANS was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1872. Edward was listed as a son in Stewart H. EVANS's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD. Edward H. was living in HH302 on Smith’s Island in 1900 (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith.).

6 vi. Lybrand T. EVANS, son of Stewart H. and Mary Ann Evans EVANS was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 11 February 1876. Lybrand was listed as a son in Stewart H. EVANS's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith.).

He married Emma CHANDLER in 1898 in Accomack Co., VA (Mears, James Egbert., Hack’s Neck and It’s People Past and Present Part I and Part II (Chicago Ill: James E. "William S. Bradshaw 39 carpenter, Virginia O, 35 wife keeps house, Eliza A. 17, Virginia F. 8, Alexander S. 6, Madora H. 5 months, Thomas J. Smith 23, sailor born in New York, father born in Ireland, mother born in England." William died on 28 February 1912. MARSHALL on 15 June 1881 in Somerset Co, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages). George was born on The "TANGIER ISLANDS VA", including Shankes, South Point, etc. Accomack VA in 1861 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). He was the son of John W. and Julia Ann Tyler MARSHALL. George died on 22 August 1888. Interment was in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton).

On 31 August 1885 Elizabeth and George W. MARSHALL had Agnes V. MARSHALL on Smith's Island MD (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Ewell). Elizabeth died on 11 November 1886. Interment was in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton).

2 ii. Virginia L. BRADSHAW was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 12 August 1871.

Virginia was listed as a daughter in William S. BRADSHAW's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD (Powell, Jody, Somerset 1880, p 55). On 30 January 1891, Virginia and Peter J. Marshall obtained a license to marry in Somerset County MD. She was his third wife. She died in 1897. She married Peter J. MARSHALL on 30 January 1890 in Somerset Co, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages). Peter was born on The "TANGIER ISLANDS VA", including Shankes, South Point, etc. Accomack VA in 1846 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). He was the son of John "Taffy" and Eleanor Evans MARSHALL. Peter died in 1935 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton).

Virginia died on 12 January 1891. Interment was in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Ibid.). Her stone reads:

"In Memory of Virgie E. Bradshaw
Daughter of William S. and Omelia Bradshaw
Born August 12, 1874
Died January 12, 1891
"Dearest child thou here Thy loss we deeply feel.
But ‘tis god that hath bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal."

3 iii. Alexander S. BRADSHAW. was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 20 July 1874 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). Alexander was listed as a son in William S. BRADSHAW's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD (Powell, Jody, Somerset 1880, p 55). Alexander died on 28 November 1918. Interment was in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton, MD (Ibid.). He married Alice C. MARSHALL on 1 August 1894 in Somerset Co, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1920 Census, p 46). Alice was born circa 1875. She was the daughter of William A. and Margaret A. There was no one to marry us on here then. I was married to Sadie (Shadye) Evans, the daughter of James T. and Rachel Evans. We came over the next day after we were married with colors a flying. They had a grand reception at my wife's fathers's. We lived, that year, at my brothers's and with the bargain I made with him about getting married I had my half of the boat paid for according to the bargain we made and $300.00 cash."

Shadye was born on Jones Island, now known as, Jane's Island or "Old Island, Somerset Co. MD on 12 August 1842 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). She was the daughter of James T. Conflicting evidence states that Lewis was born on 2 March 1870 on Tylerton, Smith's Island, MD (Interviews with Catherine Dixon, Tylerton, Smith's Island, MD, by Gerald Kinlaw, 1989-1990 transcript in the possession of Gerald Kinlaw and Gail M. Walczyk 27 Thomas St. Coram NY (1996). (hereafter cited as Dixon, Catherine, Interview and Notes). Lewis was listed in the household of Benjamin F. MARSH on the 1870 Census in Somerset County, MD. Lewis died on 13 January 1875. He was buried at Union UME Church, Tylerton MD (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). His stone reads:

8 vii. Jesse James MARSH was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 22 June 1872 (Ibid.). Jesse was listed as a son in Benjamin F. MARSH's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD.

He married Venie MARSHALL on 2 August 1893 in Somerset County, (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 288). Venie was born on Saxis, VA on 4 January 1875 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). She was the daughter of Samuel J. and Amanda Lewis MARSHALL. Venie died in February 1969. She was buried in Union UME Churchyard, Tylerton MD (Ibid.,).

On 14 February 1895 Jesse and Venie had Sammie B. MARSH on Tylerton, Smith's Island, MD (Virginia Evans, Interview). In 1896 Jesse and Venie had Calvin E.
