On 15 March Elpetina Tyler EVANS wrote: "I will commence writing a few lines. When I was a child our parents were Alex and Sarah Tyler; 6 children, Edward P. Tyler, Laura Tyler Bradshaw, Labin Tyler, Elpetina Tyler Evans Ida Tyler Bradshaw Manie Tyler Marshall. Our parents were strict and kind to we children wanted us always to do right. We minded our parents when he said to one of we children go do so and so we went immediately. Never said I can’t go, let one of the others go, but said go to the rest one at a time he meant it. We obeyed our parents. They leached us to be honest and to tell the truth. We children were all born up in the Pines. We had a pleasant home. My father was sick 7 years before he was taken sick. When we had dinner we were in called in the Parlor. We knelt by a chair and he prayed to us and we repeated the Lord’s Prayer. I have never forgotten it. My father kept a store when he was taken sick. He went to Crisfield to have his boat rigged up and was taken sick and had to come home. Brother Eddie had to take charge of the store. He wa young, his age was 17 years when he took charge. Uncle Jimmy Evans, mother’s brother would come down and give him advice how to do. Eddie was glad to have him come. My father’s trouble was nerve trouble, couldn’t stand company. He was a nice father. When he was sick he couldn’t do much reading. I would read to him every morning. The chapter would be psalms 34th Chapter. Learn to read it by heart. When Ida and I went to school we had to get up early and do the washing before we went to school. So we would not miss our lesson we would have 5 minutes to get to school as we lived up the Pines. See how our parents was strict with us. We had no service, only to the old Church. When it got warm we wnet to Sunday School and learned the catechism. They had no organ. Had to go back and forth, take in water and had to bail out water, we all went through a lot to get to Church and now the Church is at the door waiting for us to come in to hear the Gospel preached and fine singing. Very few go. What is the matter with the people? It seems like they have forgotten their dear Savior. I hope they will wake up and go to Church more often. When we were children, Saturday evening we were to take all our play toys and put them away until Monday morning. We did not take out on Sunday like the children are doing today. The parents, the Lord will hold them responsible. I t reads in the Bible ‘shall your children be your judges.’
I always made it a practice when on died to go visit them in their home. Often they have bereaved them. One time I went to see a widow lady. She was by herself. Her children were all married. One was so glad to see me, she said I said I am so glad to see you. Have comforted me so much and thanked me so much. When I was well I would go and see the bereaved ones. I thought it was my duty. Try to go to dear ones to see them when you may go. When Ida and I went to see our girl friends we had to ask our parents could we go. They would say to us stay one hour, we had to come at that time. If we didn’t we would be punished for not minding but she never done it that often. But time has come when they come and go like they want. The children has too much money to spend. We children did not have much to spend. Our parents thought it would make us spent thrift. They done it son when we were married we had learned to save and not to spend thrift. I am glad my parents learned me how to save. We had no money to spend, didn’t know what it was to go to the store and buy candy. My father had a store. He would not allow us to go behind the counter. It might learn us to take things. We feel proud of our father’s teaching us home every time. We remember these things. We tried to teach us children to do the right thing as our father taught us. We went to Sunday School every Sunday and everyday school. When we were old enough to wear nice clothes we would have one nice dress and that was wore over and a while it wasn’t put on. When we said to wear it we had to ask mother what we must wear. Mother, she would say wear that dress not the good one this Sunday. We minded her but now these days I think they suit themselves. There may be a few minds their parents. Let the parents see to their children like we children was brought up to be, saving and not going beyond their means. I am glad I was taught that way to serve. When we went to the table we were taught to say thank the Dear Lord for what we have to eat. I am writing this now we were taught. Now I will tell you how we had to wear our coats.
When we got a coat it would last us several years. We did not put it on when we went out anytime. Wore it on Sunday. We wore older coats to save our good ones. There were mo ice cream cones, very little of ice cream. When our parents had company we children would come in and take a seat and set very quiet. We would behave ourselves and act nice. We were taught that way and we had to mind our parents. If we didn’t we would get punished. We were not allowed to destroy people’s property like their doing today. I feel sorry for the children parents not letting them go to school, wandering up and down, getting in mischief and learning bad language and fighting. How sorry I am for the children. When we children got married we had to look out for ourselves. We did not depend on our parents. It is the best way to do. That was the way we brought them up. We were kind to them.
In our day ho crab houses. They fished and tended to their place, raising plenty of potatoes and vegetables and put their fis up for the winter, killed hogs and killed beef. That run us all winter. Didn’t have to go to the store for everything. We were not allowed to be on the rod very often once and a while. People wold talk about it. We had 4 children, Sadie, Laura, Eddie and Gordon. They were nice children to us." (Dixon, Catherine, Interview and Notes).
