LORENZO DOW EVANS

Lorenzo Dow Evans, son of Mitchell and Margaret Tyler EVANS, was born in Somerset County, MD in 1831. He moved to Crisfield. Lorenzo was listed in the household of Mitchell EVANS on the 1850 Census in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1850 Census).

He married Alcey Ellen Evans circa 1856. It was unrecorded. She was the daughter of Noah and Patience Mister EVANS. She was also known as Ellen. Alcey was listed in the household of David L. TYLER on the 1850 Census in Somerset Co, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1850 Census). On 26 November 1850 Benjamin Bradshaw and Eliza J. his wife deeded Laban Evans, Benjamin Evans children and devisees of Jesse Evans and Nancy Evans, Ellen Evans, Emiline Evans and Edward F. Evans, children and heirs at law of Noah Evans dec'd who was the son of Jesse Evans. Whereas Josiah Evans on 19 September 1803 bound himself unto Jesse Evans among other lands on half of the tract called "Cow Ridge" alias "Point Comfort" and whereas Josiah Evans has departed intestate leaving the bond in full force and leaving Eleanor Tyler, wife of Severn Tyler his only child and heir at law and whereas Severn Tyler and Eleanor by their deed conveyed said parcel to Solomon Bradshaw who conveyed it to Benjamin Bradshaw. The devisees of Jesse Evans are entitled to half the said tract and this establishes title and division line commencing at Levins Creek due west from west en of Benjamin Bradshaw's north ditch and thence easterwardly to the Thoroughfare and the parties of record agree.

Bond attached:

Whereas sundry disputes have arisen between Josiah Evans and Jesse Evans respecting the division of their land whereon they live agreeably to the last will of John Evans and with respect to their rights in a certain Island called "Cow Ridge" alias "Point Comfort." Both agree to let each live where they are. Alcey died before 1 May 1899 (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 146).

Lorenzo was listed as one of Solomon Snead EVANS's nearest neighbors on the 1870 Census in Somerset County, MD (Barnes, John C., Somerset 1860 Census). Lorenzo was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Somerset Co, MD (Ibid.). An abstract reads: "Lorenzo Evans 36 sailor, Alsie E. 33, Amanda 12, George 9, Patience J. 4, Isbella F. 1."

He married Ethel FLUEHART on 1 May 1899 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Ibid., p 146). Ethel was born circa 1886.

Lorenzo died in 1917.

Lorenzo Dow EVANS and Alcey Ellen EVANS had the following children:

1 i. Amanda S. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 1 April 1859 (Evans, Walczyk & gWalczyk, Ewell, p 35). She married Henry A. W. KELLAM on 2 Jun 1875 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 143). Henry was born circa 1847.

Circa 1876 Amanda and Henry A. W. KELLAM had Lawrence A. KELLAM on Smith's Island, Maryland (Powell, Jody., Somerset County Maryland 1880 Census (Roanoke, TX: Jody Powell, 1991), p 150 (hereafter cited as Powell, Jody, Somerset 1880). On 11 December 1877 Amanda and Henry A. W. KELLAM had Gordon T. KELLAM on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Jennings L., Walczyk, Frank V. and Walczyk, Gail M., Graven Inscriptions of Rhodes Point MD (Coram NY: Peter's Row, to be published Spring 1999.), (hereafter cited as Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point). Amanda died on 19 April 1880. She was interred at Corinth UME Churchyard, Ewell MD (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Ewell, p 35). Her stone reads:

"Amanda S. Kellam
Daughter of Lorenzo D. and Alcey E. Evans
Died April 19, 1880.
Aged 21 years 5 mos. and 19 days.
There is a land that's fairer than day.
And by faith we can see it afar.
For the Father awaits o'er the way to prepare us a dwelling place there.
When the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there."

2 ii. George L. D. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland in 1861. He married George Anna EVANS on 16 June 1882 in Somerset County, MD. A license was obtained in Somers (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 145). George Anna was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 13 September 1863 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point). She was the daughter of William D. and Virginia A. Guy EVANS. George Anna died on 24 May 1901 (Ibid.).

On 12 January 1886 George and George Anna had Hattie E. EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). On 12 January 1887 George and George Anna had George R. EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point). In 1890 George and George Anna had John G. EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid.). On 22 January 1891 George and George Anna had Mary V. EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Ibid.). In 1893 George and George Anna had Willie G. EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Ewell, p 32). On 10 July 1897 George and George Anna had Janie EVANS on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point).

He married Ida E. TYLER on 29 May 1902 in Somerset County, MD. A license was obtained (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 145). Ida was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 11 February 1883 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point). She was the daughter of Severn and Milcah Dize TYLER. Ida died on 2 September 1917 (Ibid.).

In 1903 George and Ida had Winfred EVANS in Smith's Island MD (Ibid.). Circa 1906 George and Ida had Edna Elizabeth EVANS in Smith's Island MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1920 Census p 213). Circa 1910 George and Ida had Margaret EVANS in Smith's Island MD. (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1920 Census p 213). George died in 1927.

3 iii. Patience J. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1864. She moved to Crisfield. She married William LANDON circa 1884. It was unrecorded. William was born circa 1860.

4 iv. Peggy "Janie" Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1866. She moved to Crisfield. She married Abraham RIGGIN on 30 September 1885 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages, p 392). Abraham was born circa 1863 (Ibid., p 392).

5 v. Isabella F. Evans was born on Smith's Island, Maryland circa 1869. She moved to Crisfield. She married Sidney LANDON on 3 December 1885 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Ibid., p 145). Sidney was born circa 1864 (Ibid.).

6 vi. John H. G. EVANS was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 3 February 1872. He moved to Crisfield.

7 vii. Mary E. EVANS was born on Smith's Island, Maryland on 4 November 1874. She moved to Crisfield. She married Abendnago RIGGIN on 5 June 1895 in Somerset County, MD. It was recorded in Somerset Co (Ibid., p 392). Abendnago was born circa 1865 (Ibid., p 392).

Fact

On 2 September 1682, 15 years after his Virginia patent, HENRY SMITH was assigned 1000 acres of a tract called "Pitchcraft" from WILLIAM STEVENS. The land lay north of the division line and between the Bay and Tangier Sound. It did not include the lands above Mister’s Thoroughfare which is now a wildlife refuge.

LEVIN R. RODGERS

Levin R. Rodgers was born circa 1821 in Virginia. He circa 1845 he married Mary T. The marriage was not recorded and her surname is unknown.

Levin R. RODGERS had living with him in this household:

Fact

Stephen Mister and Joe Whayland were notorious picaroons who had both friends and relations on Smith’s Island.

EDWARD REVELL

Edward Revell was born circa 1813 in Virginia. He circa 1833 he married Leah. The marriage was not recorded and her surname is unknown.

Edward and Leah REVELL had the following children:

1. Mary E. Revell born circa 1847

2. George Revell born circa 1852

3. Arron Revell born circa 1855

4. Minnie Revell born circa 1858

5. Margaret Revell born May 1860

This was an Afro American Household and located over the Thoroughfare.

Fact

After a thorough study of the three cemeteries on the Island, it has been gleaned that these cemeteries were at one time family burial sites. The Corinth UME Churchyard at Ewell being the JESSE EVANS site; the Calvary UME Churchyard at Rhodes Point being the NATHAN EVANS site and the Union UME Churchyard at Tylerton being the TYLER FAMILY site.

The oldest stone that still remains is at Rhodes Point. It is a ruff stone and the epitath that remains etched in it reads: "K. E. Nov ye 8 1794 N. E. aged 31." This stone is next to Richard Evans "Who departed this life July 4th 1828." This is "King" Richard. It is now thought that K. E. is Keziah Evans the daughter of Nathan Evans and the first wife of Richard. Evans whom she lies next to. Also in the same area is Elijah Evans

April 23, 1763 - January 30, 1841, a son of Nathan.

The oldest stones at Ewell are Nancy Evans, August 16, 1762 - October 22, 1831, 63 Years, Jesse Evans

January 15, 1760 - February 25, 1835 and Yuphemy Evans, Consort of Richard, Departed This Life April 16, 1838, Aged 83 Years 6 Mos, And 17 Days. Nancy was Jesse’s wife and Yuphemy (Euphemia) was his sister and the second wife of the above "King" Richard." Her nickname was "Fanny."

Tylerton’s oldest stones are Richard Bradshaw, Died June 28, 1814, Aged 72 years, Mary Ann Tyler November 6, 1823, Aged 19 Months and David Tyler, November 15, 1823, Aged 68 years. Richard Bradshaw was the husband of Arrabella Tyler and the brother-in-law of David. The baby, Mary Ann Tyler was David’s granddaughter. Butler Tyler, David’s oldest brother, and at one time the owner of much of the land at Tylerton, died circa 1826 and is probably buried at the big tree stump with the metal marker.

Josiah O. Fluehart, son of Levin and Sarah FLUEHART, was born on THE TANGIER ISLANDS, (Shankes, South Point, etc.), VA circa 1844. Josiah was listed in the household of Levin FLUEHART on the 1850 Census in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1850 Census). Josiah was listed in the household of Levin FLUEHART on the 1850 Census in Accomack Co., VA.

He married Angeline F. Messick circa 1864. Angeline was born in Smith's Island MD circa 1848. She was the daughter of Johnson and Charlotte MESSICK. Angeline was listed in the household of Johnson MESSICK on the 1850 Census in Somerset Co, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1850 Census). In Johnson MESSICK's will on 2 January 1854 in Somerset Co, MD, Angeline was named as an heir. Thomas was born on Smith's Island MD on 8 March 1814 (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton). He was the son of Hamilton and Eleanor Evans BRADSHAW . Polly was a member of Smith's Island Church Methodist at the church at Orchard Ridge (over Kissy's), on Smith's Island in 1856, 1857, 1858 (Antioch Methodist, Church Records).

Polly died 16 July 1906. (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Tylerton).
