On 6 January 1870 Juliann EVANS sold to Julany DIZE a lot on Smith’s Island witnessed by David TYLER.

Catherine applied for a marriage license to wed Benjamin F. WHITNEY on 3 February 1868 in Somerset County, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Marriages). B. F. Whitney age 27, to marry Catherine Barnes, age 30, widow. Note: Although Mary C. Whitney EVANS stone sates that she was born 15 August 1881, she was enumerated in the 1880 Census.
In April 1869 Catherine and Benjamin F. WHITNEY had John A. WHITNEY (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith). Catherine died before 1880. Tradition states that Catherine had a growth on her face. Extremely depressed and not wanting to live anymore, she threw herself off into the gut behind her house. (Then known as Francis Gut, now Doctor's Gut.) Her grave has never been found. On 15 August 1881 Catherine and Benjamin F. WHITNEY had Mary C. WHITNEY on Smith's Island, Maryland (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Ewell). Evans, and was told it was a line tree of the two States, Maryland and Virginia, and I can corroborate what has already been related by Mr. Evans, both as to tree and stones. I can add only that I believe the original Hog Neck extended as high north as the stone found in the Chesapeake by Mr. Dies. The north end of Hog Neck has washed at least 100 yards in my day, and is now cut through by two small creeks."

He was buried at Asbury UME Church, Mt. Vernon MD (Ibid., p 71). In April 1888 Eleanor and James HOPKINS had Lydia HOPKINS in Mount Vernon, Somerset County, MD (Ibid., p 71). 18 February 1895 Eleanor and James HOPKINS had Edna Ruth HOPKINS in Mount Vernon, Somerset County, MD (Ibid., p 71). Eleanor died in 1949. Interment was in Asbury UME Churchyard, Mt. Vernon MD (Ibid., p 71).

Conflicting evidence states that Edward was born in 1875 on Rogue's Point now Rhodes Point, Smith's Island, MD (Barnes, John C., Somerset County Maryland 1860 Census (San Diego, CA: Ruth T. Dryden, 1988.), p 94 (hereafter cited as Barnes, John C., Somerset 1860 Census). Edward was listed as a son in Charles W. MARSH of Walter's household on the 1880 Census in Somerset County, MD (Powell, Jody, Somerset 1880). Edward died in 1960 he was buried in Calvary UME Churchyard, Rhodes Pt. (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point). About 1910 Edward F. Marsh married Arinthia McNamara, a school teacher. They were listed on Smith Island living between Alonza Hoffman and Ira D. Smith in the 1920 Census with daughter Mary A. age 8.

Nellie was born on Smith's Island, Maryland in April 1888 (Dryden Leslie, Families of Smith, p 27). She was the daughter of Griffin W. and Anna E. Evans HOFFMAN. Nellie died on 20 May 1980.She was buried in Calvary UME Churchyard, Rhodes Point (Evans, Walczyk & Walczyk, Rhodes Point). On 26 June 1906 Levin and Nellie had Herman Mathew MARSH on Rhodes Point, MD (Ibid.). On 26 February 1913 Levin and Nellie had Lena MARSH on Rhodes Point, MD (Ibid.). Circa 1915 Levin and Nellie had William C. MARSH on Rhodes Point, MD (Dryden, Ruth T., Somerset 1920 Census, p 223).
