Skirting Trouble - Contributed by Gail M. Walczyk

Told by Viola Mears Stant, grandaughter of Thomas S. Joynes:

One night, coming home from running the blockage, my grandfather found himself being followed by the Yankees. He headed up the creek towards home and the Yankees followed in hot pursuit. Leaving the boat at the shore, he ran into farm house at the end of the creek, with the Yankees still following him. But....When the Yankees arrived at the house there was no trace of him. All they found was two young girls sitting there in the parlor. They graciously excused themselves and left, for at the time it wasn't polite to ask a young lady to stand. They had sat on him to hide him from the Yankees.
