The above is a list of debts incurred by William Millward that was recorded in the court of Somerset County Maryland.
In reading this list it could be possibly deduced that William Millward is about to open an "Ordinary." An ordinary is an inn or a tavern. (Mahalyka, Jean M. Loose Papers and Sundry Court Cases April 1744 to July 1761. Eastville VA: Hickory House, p 192. ) He owes for nails and a hand saw and an iron plate that could be used to build a Tavern. He owes for pork, and 6 quarts 3 1/2 Pints of rum which could be used as food and drink for people who frequented his establishment.
Both the punch and the rum with sugar were popular drinks at the time. Punch was a "hard" drink, sometimes made with wine or rum and fruits. Almost like the "spiked" punch of today.
He also owed for personal items such as "specticles" (glasses), brandy consumed both at home and in town, and the making of one jacket.
