Interrogration Concerning Barnaby Brian

At a court held at Accomacke the 23rd September anno domni 1639.

Interogations produced to

1 - After your arrival in New England what tobacco do you know that Barnabye Brian sold and delivered and at what rate. delivered and at what rate.

2 - Might not you have returned presently after your arrival in New England with or without a freight.

3 - Might not you have had 30 tons of [beeie] for tobacco.

4 - What was the reason Mr. Burchrode had not the tobacco he bought of Barnabye.

5 - What rigging or sails did Barnabie Bryan sell or dispose of.

6 - Where did Barnabye spend his time for the most part while you remained in New England.

7 - What fish did Barnabie sell or give away either in New England or at the Dutch.

8 - When did you hear first of the intended voyage for the West Indies.

9 - What company intended to go with him and how many brought you from New England to the Dutch at or charge.

10 - What goods did Barnabye buy with tobacco and what became of them.

12 - What freight was offered to the vessel which was refused or neglected.

13 - How much did you hear Barnabye say he spent in one week.

14 - What goods did Barnabye receive of Mr. Bushrode for 1000 lbs. of rolled tobacco, and what became of them.

1ly - To the first in ten he answereth that Barnabie Bryan sold 20 lbs. of tobacco roll for eight pence per lb..item at the same place 100 lbs. was sold

for one muskett. At Nodler Island a great quantity was sold but at what price this depondent knoweth not, as also 2 or 3 roules of tobacco was sold at the same place for five bushells of corn.

2ly - He answereth that it was reported that they should have had [beer] to have brought with them but what quantity he knoweth not neither can this depondent say certainly it is so or not.

3 ly - Secondly he answereth that they might have returned within ten weeks without a freight.

4 ly - He answereth that Barnabie would not allow in drought to Mr. Brushrod, where of he would have but two hogheads of the tobacco.

5 ly - Barnabie sold a boat anchor for 11 shillings and a quantity of the sheates, cable was also sold.

6 ly - He answereth that Barnabie spent his time for the most part in Boston Ordinary and sometimes at Mr. Mavericks.

7 ly - Barnabie gave about two hundred fish at the Dutch Plantation to diverse persons.

8 ly - He heard of the intended voyage some days before they came out of Boston.

9 ly - Barnabie brought 6 men for that end who lay forty days on ships charge.

10 ly - He bought so much ribbon as came to 7 pounds odd shillings and sold it again for 50 pence per foot and carbine bought with 11 lbs. of tobacco and left at Salem.

11 ly - He answereth they might have been freight [-----] at 30 lbs. per month

12 ly - He answered nothing.

13 ly - He answereth that Barnabye Brian received 16 or 18 gals. of strong waters which was drunk at Nodles Island.
