GEORGE D. RIGGS

George D. Riggs, son of John Riggs and Sarah his wife, was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1772.  George died before 25 January 1813 (Miles 445).

He married Sarah Lewis on 30 October 1798 in Accomack Co., VA.  The text reads: "George Day Riggs to marry Sarah Lewis on 30 October 1798 Licence for Thomas Evan to officiate, granted by Littleton Savage, clerk of the court" (Turman 236).  Sarah was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1780.  She married Richard Sparrow of Procession District 9 on 3 March 1817 in Accomack Co., VA (267).  The text reads: "Richard Sparrow to marry Sarah Riggs widow of George D. on 3 March 1817.  George White security."

On 6 January 1796 the lands of George Riggs were processioned (Processioners Returns 22).  The record reads:

Jany 6th 1796 - George Warner, Isaiah Hickman, Benjn Parks, Joseph Riggs, George D. Riggs,George Willett, The Glebe Lands, James Rodgers, Josa Bell, John Moore, Robt Davis, Isaiah Baker, John Baker, Hezekiah Baker, Mark Littleton, Salathiel Baker, Savage Orphan, Samuel Crippen, Peggy Taylor, John Custis, Caecar Evans, Babel Savage. Elijah Wright, John Baker, Josa Bell, Wm Onions. Ephraim Vessels, Salathiel Baker, Mathew Killman, Richd Dix, John Berry.

The procession of this District was taken at three different times; the first on 26 December 1795; the next two parts were taken in two-day intervals, January 5th & 6th, and January 8th & 9th. George was there to witness the procession ( Processioners Returns 22). 

George was listed on the 1800 Accomack Co., census. (Powell:36). The census reads: Accomack Parish page 20. George D. Riggs 2 males 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45. George was listed on the 1810 Accomack Co., census. (Powell 86). The census reads: Accomack Parish page 121. George Riggs 2 male 0-10, 1 male to 16, 1 male to 45, 1 female to 16, 1 female to 45.

George made a will on 16 December 1812 in Accomack Co., VA.  It was probated 25 January 1813 (Miles 445).  An abstract of his will reads:

Riggs, George D. - 16 December 1812 - 25 January 1813 - savage Crippen Extr. To wife ... My land to be sold & the money to my children John B. Riggs, Samuel B. Riggs & Augustony Riggs. To wife ... in lieu of dower.  Witt: Joseph Riggs, Sally Onions & Leah Riggs.  Prob: James Ailworth & Geprge P. Bagwell securities.

Riggs, George D.  31 December 1812 (Sale) 28 March 1814 (Order to Audit) 27 June 1814 (Rec'd) - Buyers: Widow, Joseph Riggs, John Riggs, Lucy (Negro) & Joseph Evans (Negro).  Auditors: Gilbert M. Leatherbury & Samuel Crippen.

Whitelaw states: 1717 John Bird sold 200 acres [of A125] to Abraham Riggs and ten years later he (wife Rosanna) left the home part to his son Joseph and the balance to his son Joshua.  The death of Joseph was not noted but he was succeeded by a son John who in 1788 (wife Sarah) left it to his sons George (D.) and Joseph (1191).

George D. Riggs and Sarah Lewis had the following children:

1 i. John B. Riggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1799.  He married Mrs. Elizabeth Leatherbury, on 27 September 1820 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 236).  The text reads: "John B. Riggs to marry Elizabeth Leatherbury, Widow, on 27 September 1820. James Russell security."   Elizabeth was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1795.

2 ii. Samuel B. Riggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1802.

3 iii. Augustony Riggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1806.
