John Boggs son of Francis Boggs and Ann his wife was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 16 February 1730. John died on 16 July 1822.
He married twice. He first married Rachel Parker circa 1751. Rachel was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1732. Rachel was the daughter of John Parker and Frances his wife. She was the sister of William Parker and Bridget "Parker" Crowson (see household 5), the aunt of Sarah "Parker" Smith (see household 1) and Micheal Parker.
Rachel died circa 1770. In John Parker's will on 25 August 1754 in Accomack Co., VA, Rachel was named as an heir. It was probated 1 January 1755 (Wills and Administrations of Accomack County, Virginia 1663-1800 182). An abstract reads, "To son John Parker. Sons William and Robert Parker. Sons Anderson and Edward Parker. Daughter Frances White. Daughter Susannah Wise. Four daughters Ann Lacey, Rachel Boggs, Betty Guy, and Bridget Parker. Children not to have any part of their estate without the consent of their mother. Wife Frances Parker to have whole estate during her widowhood. Wife and son Robert Parker Exrs. Witt: David Neilson, Francis Boggs, Sacker Parker, Southey White. - In order of probate - John Parker heir at law to the testator. - Frances Parker qualified."
He married second Margaret Smith circa 1772. Margaret was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1742. Margaret was the daughter of William Smith. She had first married Kendall Ames circa 1763. Margaret died before 26 April 1824 (Will Book 1823-1823 537). Circa 1765 Margaret and Kendall Ames had Smith Ames in Accomack Co., VA. In William Smith's will on 4 June 1784 in Accomack Co., VA, Margaret was named as an heir. It was probated 24 February 1784 (Wills and Administrations of Accomack County, Virginia 1663-1800 341). An abstract of his will reads, "To grandson George Smith all my land and marsh I ever owned on Pungoteague Creek in Slutkill Neck. To daughter Elizabeth Boggs. To daughter Peggy Boggs. To son Solomon Smith. To grandson William Smith (under 21). To Henry Trader (under 21). To grandson Smith Aimes. Balance of estate to be divided between Betty, Peggy, Solomon, William and George. John Arlington and son Solomon executors. Witt: John Smith, Levin Boggs."
John was listed on the personal property Tax List for 1787 (Yantis-Schreiner 98). The record reads: "John Boggs 2 white males over 16, 2 Blacks over 16, 1 black under 16, 1 horse, 11 cattle."
The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Eleventh District Decr 29th 1795 - Lines between Francis Boggs & John Boggs ... (Walczyk). John Boggs witnessed this procession.
John was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 12). The census reads: "1 male 0-10. 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 2 females 45+, 9 slaves"
John was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 58). The census reads: "Boggs, John 1 male to 16, 1 male to 26, 2 males to 26, 1 male 45+, 1 female to 26, 1 feamle to 45, 1 female 45+, 9 slaves.
On 2 December 1822 the estate of John Boggs was inventoried and sold and an audit was taken on 25 January 1823 (Miles 76). Elijah Boggs & James Boggs were administrators. Buyers were Mary Boggs, Margaret Boggs, James Boggs, William Boggs, Susan Boggs & Elijah Boggs.
Margaret made a will on 25 January 1823 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 26 April 1824 (Will Book 1823-1824 537). The will reads:
In the name of God Amen I Peggy Boggs do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following viz; first I give and bequeath to Kendall Ames, Elijah Boggs, James Boggs and Rachel Rodgers (the wife of Wm. Rodgers,) the whole of my estate of every kind to be equally divided between them. Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Elijah Boggs my executor to this my last will and testament revoking all other former wills hereto fore made by me. As witness my hand and seal the 25 day of January 1823. Witt: Isaac Smith, Littleton Chandler, Sarah Turlington." - "At court held for Accomack County on the 26th day of April 1824 this last will and testament of Peggy Boggs dec'd was proved by the oath of Littleton Chandler a witness thereto and ordered to be recorded.
John Boggs and Rachel Parker had the following children:
1 i. Molly Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1752. 2 ii. Hancock Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1755. John was listed on the personal property Tax List for 1787 (Yantis-Schreiner 98). The record reads: "Boggs, Hancock, John Boggs charged with the tax." John was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 12). The census reads: "Boggs, Hancock, (John) 1 male 26-45." Hancock is not mentioned in the 1810 census. 3 iii. Catherine Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1758. She married Stephen Moore circa 1783 in Accomack Co., VA. Stephen was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1758. Stephen died before October 1810. Catherine was listed as the head of a family in the 1810 census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 82). The census reads: "St. George District, page 39, Moor, Catherine 1 female 0-10, 1 female to 45." 4 iv. William Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1761. He married Sarah Crowson (see household 5) circa 1783 in Accomack Co., VA. Sarah was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1765. Sarah was the daughter of William Crowson and Bridget Parker. 5 v. John Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1764. 6 vi. Abel Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1767. He was formerly in service in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment in the Revolutionary War (Soldiers and Sailors 21.John Boggs and Margaret Smith had the following children:
7 vii. Arthur Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1775. He married Susanna Crowson (see household 5) circa 1796 in Accomack Co., VA. Susanna was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1784. Susanna was the daughter of William Crowson and Bridget Parker. He witnessed the will of James Taylor on 9 June 1813 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 20 July 1813 (Will Book 1812-1814).8 viii. Elijah Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1781. He married Ann Riley about 21 December 1811. Ann was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1790. On 21 December 1811 in Accomack Co., VA, Elijah Boggs of John applied for a marriage license bond to marry Ann Riley. William Finney was security (Turman 34). In his mother Margaret's will on 25 January 1823 in Accomack Co., VA, Elijah was named as an heir.
In Kendall Ames' will, Elijah was named by Kendall to handle his estate on 27 June 1839 in Accomack Co., VA. The will was probated 25 November 1850 (Miles 6). An abstract of his Will reads: "To Arthur Boggs' children Nancy Northam, Margaret Parker, William Boggs, Henry Boggs, Betsy Mason, Jane Moore & Lucy Moore each $5. To my half brother James Boggs $20. To my half sister Rachel Rodgers $20. To my half brother Elijah Boggs & my nephew John S. Ames my Negro man Isaac. Remainder to my half brother Elijah Boggs & nephew John S. Ames. Elijah Boggs Extr. Witt: Joseph P. Boggs & John R. Boggs." He was also named as heir.
9 ix. Rachel Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 22 October 1784 (Graven Stones 231). Rachel died on 13 December 1858. She was buried at Boggs Place, west of Cashville, VA (231). She married William W. Rodgers on 7 March 1820 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 240). She was his third wife. William was born in Accomack Co., VA on 26 January 1785 (Graven Stones 232). He first married Susannah Smith on 11 January 1811 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 240). He had second married Elizabeth Smith, Susanna's sister on 23 February 1813 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 240). She was the widow of Custis Kellam. William died on 19 March 1856. He was buried at Boggs Place west of Cashville VA (Graven Stones 232). His stone reads: "1st wife Susannah Smith, 2nd wife Elizabeth Smith Kellam, 3rd wife Rachel Boggs."In her mother Margaret Smith's will on 25 January 1823 in Accomack Co., VA, Rachel was named as an heir. It was probated 26 April 1824 (Will Book 1823-1824 537).
In Kendall Ames' will on 27 June 1839 in Accomack Co., VA, Rachel was named as an heir. It was probated 25 November 1850 (Miles 6).
10 x. James S. Boggs was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 26 July 1787 (Graven Stones 29). James died on 27 March 1855. He was buried in the Rodgers - Boggs Plot west of Cashville, VA (29). His stone reads: "James Boggs, husband of Elizabeth P., son of John S. Boggs and Margaret his wife, 26 July 1787 - 27 March 1855." (See the Rodgers-Boggs Cemetery in the Virtual Cemetery section.) He married Elizabeth Parker Rodgers about 28 June 1819 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 34). Elizabeth was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 6 October 1791 (Graven Stones 29). Elizabeth was the daughter of Levi Rodgers and Sarah Scarburgh. She was the niece of Bennett Scarburgh and George Scarburgh. Elizabeth died on 26 April 1859. She was buried in the Rodgers- Boggs Plot west of Cashville VA (29). Her stone reads: "Elizabeth P. Boggs, wife of James, daughter of Levi & Sarah Rodgers, 6 October 1791-26 Arpil 1859.
In Bennett Scarburgh's will on 14 May 1799 in Accomack Co., VA, Elizabeth was named as an heir. It was probated 28 October 1799 (Nottingham 462). An abstract reads, "To niece Elizabeth Parker Rodgers $200.00 to be raised of my estate to be paid her by my Exr. when she reaches the age of 18 years, and should she die before she is 18 to my brother George Scarburgh. To friend Solomon Smith my watch. B rother George resid. legatee and Exr. Witt: William Kennahorn, John Brittingham."
In Levi Rodgers' will on 12 March 1818 in Accomack Co., VA, Elizabeth was named as an heir. It was probated 28 June 1819 (Will Book 1818-1819 373).
Elizabeth made a will on 22 April 1856 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 30 May 1859. Her will reads:
In the name of God amen I Elizabeth P. Boggs do make and ordain this instrument of writing as and for my last will and testament in manner and form following viz Item: First I give and devise to my two sons Levi R. Boggs and James A. M. Boggs my tract of land containing one hundred and sixty acres it being the land devised to me by my father Levi Rodgers on condition that they shall pay to my three daughters viz Sally S. Joynes, the wife of Elias D. Joynes, Elizabeth M. Bayly, the wife of Thomas Bayly, and Georgiana C. Smith, the wife of James Smith each the sum of five hundred and sixty dollars, and if they take the said land I do hereby charge the same with the payment of the said several sums to my three daughters - I mean that my two sons Levi and James together shall pay to my three daughters the said sum of five hundred and sixty dollars as above desired. Item Second: I give to my son James A. M. Boggs my riding carriage. Item Third: The residue of my estate to be equally divided amongst all my children viz Levi R., James A. M., Sally S. Joynes, Elizabeth M. Bayly and Georgiana C. Smith - And lastly I do hereby appoint my two sons Levi R. and James A. M. Boggs executors to this my last will and testament - In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the twenty second of April eighteen hundred and fifty six.
In his mother Margaret's will on 25 January 1823 in Accomack Co., VA, James was named as an heir. It was probated 26 April 1824 (Will Book 1823-1824 537).
In Kendall Ames' will on 27 June 1839 in Accomack Co., VA, James was named
as an heir. It was probated 25 November 1850 (Miles 6).
