On 26 March 1784 John Arlington witnessed the processioning of Edmond Leatherbury and Henry Scarburgh. This land was in dispute (Processioners Returns 1723-1792). The Procession of 1784, as it originally reads: "March 26th 1784; line between Edmond Leatherbury & Henry Scarburgh Stopt by Edmond Leatherbury in presence of John Arlington Senr. Solomon Smith & William Phinney ... " On the same day John witnessed the procession of the lands of Henry Scarburgh and William Finney. The Procession of 1784, as it originally reads: "... March 26th 1784; line between Edmond Leatherbury and Henry Scarburgh & William Phinney Stopt by William Phinney in presence of John Arlington Senr. Solomon Smith & William Phinney ... NOTE: In 1795 Henry Scarburgh was deceased. He was the brother of Bennet Scarburgh (see household 16) and George Scarburgh (see household 24).
He married twice. He married Rosey Bagwell on 5 April 1786 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 9). The record reads: "John Arlington to Rosey Bagwell on 5 April 1786. William Mears security."
The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Eleventh District Decr 29th 1795 - Lines between John Arlington & George Scarburgh..." John Arlington was chosen to be one of the processioners of St. George's Parish, District 11 (Processioners Returns 1796 - 1816).
Rosey was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1767. Her maiden name is unknown. Rosey died circa 1795. He married Sophia circa 1795 in Accomack Co., VA. Her maiden name is unknown. Sophia was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1777. Sophia made a will on 2 December 1822. It was proved 24 February 1823. An abstract of her will reads:
Son John Extr. To Sally Finney, the wife of Walter Finney, a morning suit to cost $12 & ... If Sally Finney has no children at her death, then to my son John Arlington. to Nancy Arlington ... To my son John Arlington ... $500 of my estate to be put out to interest until my daughter Jane arrives at age 21. or married & if she dies before then, 1/2 to my son John & the other 1/2 to my daughter Sally Finney's children, if she has any living. Remainder to son John Arlington & daughter Salle Finney. Witt: Isaac Smith, Levin Core & Leticia Core. Prob: William D. Chandler & William Finney securities. (Miles 13)
John Arlington was listed on the Personal Property Tax of 1787. The text reads: "John Arlington Jr. charged with the tax, 1 Black male under 16, 1 horse, mare or colt, 9 cattle" (Yantis-Schreiner).
He witnessed the will of Henry Scarburgh on 11 March 1789 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 29 September 1794 (Nottingham).
The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Eleventh District Decr 29th 1795 - Lines between John Arlington & George Scarburgh... (Processioners Returns 1796 - 1816). He was one of the Processioners and he was also a witness.
John was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 2). The record reads: "Arllenton, John 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16 1 male 26-45, 3 females 0-10, 1 female 26-45. 15 Slaves."
John was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 54). The record reads: "John Arlington 1 male to 16 1 male 45+, 1 female to 16, 2 females to 26, 1 female to 45, 13 Slaves."
John was listed on the 1815 tax list (Ward). It reads: "John Arlington Pungoteague 9 mile southwest of the Court House."
John made a will on 24 September 1818 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 28 September 1818 (Miles 12). An abstract of his will reads:
John Arlington and Rosey Bagwell had the following children: 1 i. Thomas Bagwell Arlington was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1788. On 5 April 1809 he married Elizabeth Simpson in Worcester MD (Powell). He died before 30 December 1816. Letters of administration were granted his estate to John Arlington on 30 December 1816 in Accomack County.ARLINGTON, JOHN - 24 September 1818 - 28 September 1818 - John Finney Extr. To wife Sophiah Arlington 125 acres purchased from Samuel Ross & his wife to be taken next to the creek running to Scarburgh's Mill & on the east side to run parallel witn the county road leading from Onancock to Pungoteague in lieu of dower in all my land during her life. To son John Arlington the land where I now live containing 245 acres & 50 acres which I lately purchased from George Scarburgh, but not conveyed to me, but must pay George Scarburgh $160, which is the balance due on the 50 acres & also 125 acres on the opposite side of the creek which I purchased of Samuel Ross & Margaret his wife. At the death of wife Sophiah Arlington the land given her to son John Arlington. Also to son John old Cleb, young Caleb & Negro woman Mary. Old Caleb & Mary are to stay on the land during their lives. To grandson William Thomas Arlington 23 acres, two rods & 1/2 perches of land the balance of land purchased from Samuel Ross & his wife Margaret, the land beginning at road leading from the county road down to the house which Mrs. Seymour formerly lived & died, to the land belonging to the heirs of Levin Rodgers dec'd adjoining the county road & $500 when he arrives to 21 & son-in-law William Finne shall take the land & money unto his care until he arrives to age. To granddaughter Rose Ann Mears, Dimara Mears, Lorenzo Mears & John Arlington Mears £5. to daughter Nancy Arlington my Negro boy Mark & girl Nell. To daughter Sally Arlington my Negro woman Tinny & her son Edward. To daughter Jane Arlington my Negro boy Jacob & girl Lydia. Remainder to daughters Rosey Finney, Nancy Arlington, Sally Arlingon and Jane Arlington. None of my Negroes shall be sold. Witt: Edmund Savage George Window & Loavey Savage. Prob: William R. Custis & Major S. Pitts securities. on the $20,00 bond.
2 ii. Elizabeth Arlington was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1788. She married William Mears on 6 January 1806 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 197). The record reads: "William Mears to Elizabeth Arlington o 6 January 1806. John Ames security." Elizabeth died before 24 September 1818."
William was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1781. William died before 1818.
3 iii. Rosey Arlington was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 16 March 1791 (Mihalyka, Jean, Graven Stones, p 94). Rosey died on 9 July 1861 (Graven Stones 94). She married William Finney on 28 November 1814 in Accomack Co., VA. The record reads: "William Finney to marry Rosey Arlington on 28 November 1814. Elijah Boggs security."
5 iv. Ann S. "Nancy" Arlington was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 17 February 1793 (Graven Stones 84). Ann died on 22 December 1850 (84). She married John S. Edwards on 22 February 1827 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 125).
