GEORGE SCARBURGH

George was born circa 1766 at Accomack Co, VA. He was the son of Henry Scarburgh III and Elizabeth Parker.  George was named in his father's will circa 1770 at Accomack Co, VA (Nottingham 251).  George was named in his brother's will on 11 March 1789 at Accomack Co, VA.  He was named as brother George Scarburgh in the will of Henry Scarburgh (416).  George was named in his brother's will on 14 May 1799 at Accomack Co, VA.  He was named as brother George Scarburgh in the will of Bennet Scarburgh (462).

The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Eleventh District Decr > 29th 1795 - Lines between John Arlington & George Scarburgh... Lines between John Teackle & George Scarburgh" (Processioners Returns). George was not listed as a witness.

He first married Ann West circa 1799.  She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth West.  Ann died circa 1816.  He married second Casandra 'Cassey' West on 23 July 1817 at Worcester Co, MD. (Powell).  He was shown as George Scarborough and she was shown as Cassey West.  No other information was given.

He made a will on 16 December 1830 at Pungoteague Creek, Acc Co, VA.  Family should remain together & be maintained out of the profits of my estate for the next seven years after my death & for that purpose I give my wife & all my children during the term of seven years the whole of my estate including that part of it herein after given to my son George P. Scarburgh.  If wife refuses to accept the above in lieu of her 1/3 dower & resorts to her legal rights, then she is to take no benefit under my will.  After the seven years, my wife is to take her 1/3 dower.  After the seven years to my son George P. Scarburgh the plantation whereon I now reside commencing at the mouth of a small branch of Pungoteague Creek, which runs between the plantation whereon George Crosley now resides called the Spring House Gut ....adjoining James Boggs & wife ... adjoining John Arlington ... to the northeastern branch of Pungoteague Creek which runs up to my mill ....to the main creek ... Also to son George P. Scarburgh my grist mill & my Negro man Kiah & boy Smith, a son of my Negro woman Betty & the said Betty & her husband Aaron, but this bequest of the said Aaron & Betty is not to take effect if the rest of my children or either of them be then willing to accept them.  Residue to daughters Elizabeth P. C., Margaret A., Sarah H., Ann R., Catharine T. C., Susan T. & Cassy W. Scarburgh.  George P. Scarburgh Extr. who is to receive no compensation.  Witt: Isaac Smith, George Crosley & James Boggs.  George died in February 1831.  George's will was probated on 28 February 1831 at Accomack Co, VA.   Thomas R. Joynes, John G. Joynes, John Arlington & Isaac Smith were the securities (Miles 474).

George Scarburgh and Ann West had the following children:

1 i Elizabeth was born circa 1802 at Accomack Co, VA.  Elizabeth was named in her father's will on 16 December 1830 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 474).  She married John K. Chandler on 7 October 1837 at Accomack Co, VA.  Walter J. Kellam and John H. Wise were securities on the M.L.B.  (Turman).   Elizabeth was named in her sister's will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).  Elizabeth was listed with her brother in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. (Scherzinger).  She was shown as "Betsey P.C. Chandler, age 48 in HH#1113 headed by Geo. P. Scarburgh, a 43 year old judge with real estate valued at $16,500."

2 ii. Margaret was born circa 1804 at Accomack Co, VA.  Margaret was named in her father's will on 16 December 1830 at Accomack Co, VA  (Miles 474).  Margaret was named in her sister's will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).   Margaret was listed with her sister in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA.  She was shown as "Margaret Scarburgh, age 46 in HH#180 headed by Jno. S. Dix, a 44 year old merchant with real estate valued at $600."

3 iii. Sarah "Sally" Scarburgh was born circa 1806 at Accomack Co, VA.  Sarah was named in her father's will on 16 December 1830 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 474).  She married John Savage Dix on 18 May 1843 at Accomack Co, VA (Turman).  Sarah was named in her sister's will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).  Sarah was listed with her husband in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA (Scherzinger).  She was shown as "Sally Dix, age 44 in HH#180 headed by Jno. S. Dix, a 44 year old merchant with real estate valued at $600."

4 iv. George P. Scarburgh was born circa 1807 at Accomack Co, VA.  On 9 October 1833 he married Mary S. Joynes.  The record reads: "George P. Scarburgh to Mary S. Joynes on 9 October 1833.  Thomas Joynes security" (Turman).

5 v. Ann was born on 17 August 1808 at Accomack Co, VA (Graven Stones).  Ann was named in her father's will on 16 December 1830 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 474).  She married James H. Addison on 11 February 1834 at Accomack Co, VA.   Robert W. Williams was security.  They were married on 13 Apr 1834 (Turman).  Ann was named in her sister's will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).  Ann was listed with her husband in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA (Scherzinger).  She was shown as "Ann Addison, age 40 in HH#110 headed by James H. Addison, a 42 year old farmer with real estate valued at $1,800." 5 Ann died on 21 March 1898. Her body was interred at Addison Plot, Cashville, Acc Co, VA.   Her tombstone reads: Ann R. Addison, wife of Jas. H. Addison (Graven Stones).  See the Addison Plot for her tombstone.

6 vi. Catharine was born circa 1814 at Accomack Co, VA.  Catharine was named in her father's will on 16 December 1830 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 474).  She married James Henry Dix on 2 December 1834 at Accomack Co, VA, Samuel Melson security (Turman 82).  Catharine was named in her husband's will on 4 February 1849 at Accomack Co, VA.  She was named as wife Catharine T. C. Dix in the will of James H. (Miles).   Catharine died before 20 January 1850 (Miles 169).  She made a will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).  An abstract of her will reads:

To my daughter Sally E. Dix .... To my son James H. Dix ...  To my daughter of Sally E. & my son James H. Dix .... the portrait of their father & myself ....  To my brother George P. Scarburgh, in trust for the use of my sister Anne B. Addison, .... To my sister Elizabeth P. C. Chandler ...  To my sister Sally H. Dix ...  To my brother George P. Scarburgh my refrigerator.  Residue to my 2 children & if either die under age & without issue, then to the survivor & if the survivor dies under age 21 & without issue then to my nephews Henry S. & John G. Dix.  Income & profits shall not be so applied unless it be necessary after exhausting the income of the estate they are entitled to under the will of their father, my late husband, James H. Dix.  Brother George P. Scarburgh Extr. & guardian of my 2 children Sally E. & James H. Dix.  Witt: Southey S. Satchell & Levin S. Joynes.  Codicil: 20 Jan 1850 - To my stepdaughter Mary Anne Dix 2 pairs of pillow cases marked with the initials of her grandmother, Tabitha Watson & ...  To each of my sisters Margaret A. Scarburgh, Susan T. Mapp, Cassy W. Lofland & Anne R. Addison ....  Witt: Southey S. Satchell & Levin S. Joynes.  Catharine's will was probated on 28 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA.  Thomas R. Joynes & John S. Dix were securities on the bond of $15,000.

7 vii Susan was born circa 1816 at Accomack Co, VA.  Susan was named in her father's will on 16 December 1830 at Accomack Co, VA.  She was named as daughter (Miles 474).  She married George S. Mapp on 10 August 1840 at Accomack Co, VA, James H. Dix security (Turman).  Susan was named in her sister's will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).  Susan was listed with her husband in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA (Scherzinger).  She was shown as "Susan T. Mapp, age 34 in HH#79 headed by Geo. S. Mapp, a 43 year old farmer with real estate value $20,000."

Child of George Scarburgh and Casandra 'Cassey' West:

8. viii. Cassandra "Cassey" Scarburgh was born 7 May 1819 (Graven Stones 167).  In the Accomack County Death Register her death is recorded as: Lofland, Cassey, w/f, 7 Apr 1895, in Dist. No 1, cause unknown, 76 yrs, daughter of Scarburgh, Geo. & Scarburgh, Cassey, Lofland, Alfred, Husband g/info (Death Register).  Her stone reads: "Cassandra W. Lofland, wife of Alfred Lofland 7 May 1819 - 2 april 1893 age 75 years, 10 months, 26 days."  (See the Lofland Cemetery for her tombstone.)  NOTE the discrepancy in the age and the date of death between the two records (Graven Stones 167).  She married Alfred Lofland on 2 July 1839 at Accomack Co, VA, Isaiah Bagwell security (Turman).  Alfred was born 18 October 1815 (Graven Stones 167).  He died 22 January 1897 (Graven Stones 167).  (See the Lofland Cemetery for his tombstone.)  Casandra was named in her sister's will on 20 January 1850 at Accomack Co, VA (Miles 169).  Casandra was listed with her husband in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA (Scherzinger).  She was shown as "Cassey Lofland, age 30 and born in VA in HH#57 headed by Alfred Lofland, a 34 year old farmer, born in DE."
