SOLOMON SMITH

Solomon Smith was the son of William Smith, and first cousin of Levin Smith. He was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1764. Solomon died before 27 October 1807.On 26 March 1784 Solomon Smith witnessed the processioning of Edmond Leatherbury and Henry Scarburgh. This land was in dispute (Processioners Returns 1723-1792). The Procession of 1784, as it originally reads: "March 26th 1784; line between Edmond Leatherbury & Henry Scarburgh Stopt by Edmond Leatherbury in presence of John Arlington Senr. Solomon Smith & William Phinney ... " On the same day Solomon witnessed the procession of the lands of Henry Scarburgh and William Finney. The Procession of 1784, as it originally reads: "... March 26th 1784; line between Edmond Leatherbury and Henry Scarburgh & William Phinney Stopt by William Phinney in presence of John Arlington Senr. Solomon Smith & William Phinney ... NOTE: In 1795 Henry Scarburgh was deceased. He was the brother of Bennet Scarburgh (see household 16) and George Scarburgh (see household 24).
He married Elizabeth Outten on 12 September 1786 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 263). Elizabeth was born in Somerset Co, MD, on 24 March 1756 (Vital Records 73). The record reads: "Betty Outten daughter of Purnell and Mary born 24 March 1751 Elizabeth was the daughter of Purnell Outten and Mary Houston."
Elizabeth made a will on 39 June 1816 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated 30 September 1816 (Miles 491). An abstract of her will reads: "Daughter Lovey Savage & nephew Purnell O. Twiford Exrs. To granddaughter Lovey Savage... To granddaughter Rose Ann Savage... To nephew Purnell O. Twiford $10. Balance to daughter Lovey Savage & grandchildren Rose Ann Savage, Severn E. Savage & Charles S. Savage. Witt: Sarah Custis, Henrietta Eichelberger & Elizabeth Bundick. Prob: John G. Joynes & William D. Chandler securities."
In William Smith's will on 4 June 1784 in Accomack Co., VA, Solomon was named as an heir. It was probated 24 February 1784 (Nottingham 341). An abstract of his will reads: "To grandson George Smith all my land and marsh I ever owned on Pungoteague Creek in Slutkill Neck. To daughter Elizabeth Boggs. To daughter Peggy Boggs. To son Solomon Smith. To grandson William Smith (under 21). To Henry Trader (under 21). To grandson Smith Aimes. Balance of estate to be divided between Betty, Peggy, Solomon, William and George. John Arlington and son Solomon executors. Witt: John Smith, Levin Boggs."
On 26 November 1790 Solomon bought Fodder Stacks in the Estate Sale of Charles Leatherbury (Will Book 1788-1794 247-254).
The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Eleventh District Decr 29th 1795 - Lines between John Teackle & Solomon Smith. Lines between Henry Custis & Solomon Smith... Lines between Solomon Smith & George Scarburgh...." Solomon Smith was chosen to be one of the processioners of St. George's Parish, District 11 (Processioners Returns 1796 - 1816).
Solomon made a will on 18 December 1804 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated (Miles 495). An abstract of his will reads: "Wife Betty & John S. Ker Exrs. To wife Betty during her life or widowhood 1/2 of all my estate & at her death to my daughters Elizabeth and Lova. The other1/2 to my daughters. Witt: William Seymour, Custis Kellam & Elijah Boggs. Prob: Betty Smith the named Extr. relinquished to John Finney who became the admr. with George Scarburgh & Thomas M. Bayly securities."
Solomon Smith and Elizabeth Outten had the following children:1 i. Elizabeth Smith was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1787. Elizabeth died before 7 March 1820. She married twice. She married Custis Kellam on 7 September 1805 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 151). Custis was born circa 1774. Custis was the son of Sacker Kellam and Charity Martin. Custis died before 25 May 1812 (Miles 301). On 10 December 1809 Custis made a will on 3 March 1812 in Accomack Co., VA. It was probated (Miles 301). An abstract of his will reads: "Wife Elizabeth Kellam Extr. To wife Elizabeth Kellam all my land lying below the neck road for 10 years. Sell the land and my Negro man Sampson to pay my debts. My wife cannot charge my daughter Harriet for 10 years. At 10 years 2/3 to daughter Harriet Kellam and 1/3 to wife & at wife's death the whole to my daughter. Witt: Francis Boggs Jr., Stephen Moore, John Moore, Charles Bradford and Ezekiel Smith."
She married second, William W. Rodgers on 23 February 1813 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 240). William was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 26 January 1785 (Graven Stones 232). He later married Rachel Boggs on 7 March 1820 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 240). He had first married Susannah Smith on 11 January 1811 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman 240). William died on 19 March 1856. He was buried at Boggs Place, west of Cashville VA (Graven Stones 232). His stone reads: "1st wife Susannah Smith, 2nd wife Elizabeth Smith Kellam, 3rd wife Rachel Boggs."
2ii. Lovey Smith was born circa 1788.
