JOHN HANNAFORD

HOUSEHOLD 34

John Hannaford was born circa 1726.  John died before 27 September 1803.  He married twice.  First circa 1751 in Accomack Co., VA.  The maiden name of his first wife is unknown.  She was born circa 1733.  He married second Margaret, the widow Williams, circa 1785.  Margaret was born circa 1760.

On 26 November 1790 an account of the sales of the estate of Charles Leatherbury was recorded in Court.  John Hannaford purchased many items.  The text reads: "6 Geese @ 15 1/2 each John Hannaford, 6 Do John Hannaford, 3 pair Turky @3/52 John Hannaford, 3 pair ditto @ 3/42 John Hannaford." 

The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Lines between Thos Leatherberry & John Hannaford ...  Lines between Thos B. Bradford & John Hannaford " (Processioners Returns).  NOTE:  This land adjoined land in District 12.

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 19).  The text reads: "1 male 45+, 1 male 10-16, 1 female 45+, 8 slaves."

John made a will on 7 April 1802 in Accomack Co., VA.  It was probated 27 September 1803 (Miles 248).  An abstract of his will reads:

7 Arpil 1802 - Partly proved 27 September 1803, proved 31 October 1803 - Margaret Hannaford & John Smith extrs.  To wife Margaret Hannaford the use of 1/2 of the plantation I now live containing 75 acres & also the use of 1/2 of our 50 arcres I purchased of Col. Levin Joynes & John Richardson adjoining the plantation where I now live during her life & widowhood & also my Negro man David & at her demise Negro to Gilbert Milby Leatherberry.  To son William Hannaford the 1/2 of the plantation where I now live & at the death or marriage of my wife the whole to my son.  To son John Hannaford 1/2 of 50 acres mentioned above & at the death oor marriage of my wife the whole to John.  To daughter Elizabeth Hannaford Negroes Towil, Tom, Joshua & Rachel & ...  To daughter-in-law Nancy Williams 1/2 doze silver teaspoons which I got by her mother.  To daughter Sally Ironmonger 1/2 silver tablespoons & the remaining & my Negro girl Martha  To son William after the death or marriageof my wife my still & all my iron casts & stand tubs.  to wife my Negro woman Nan during her life & at her death she shall have her pardon.  To my wife 1/2 of my personal estate not henceforth given & at her death or marraige my personal estat to be sold & to my son John daughter Elizabeth & son George's children.  The remainder to my son John, daughter Elizabeth & the children of son George except I give to grandson Abel Savage £10 when he arrives to lawful age.  Witt: Jacob Ross,.John Onion, & William Vernelson.  Prob: The named Extrs. relinquished to George Scarburgh who became the Administrator. with Samuel Coleburn & John Arlington securities.

John Hannaford no father and [-----], Mrs. John Hannaford had the following children:

2 i. William Hannaford of John was born circa 1755.  William died before 28 June 1813.  He married circa 1775 in Accomack Co., VA.  He married second Leah Harmon on 20 January 1812 (Turman 120).  The record reads:  "William Hanaford to marry Leah Harman on 20 January 1812.  John B. Warrington security."  William made a will on 8 May 1813 in Accomack Co., VA.  It was probated 28 June 1813 (Miles 249).  An abstract of his will reads:

8 May 1813 28 June 1813 - Wife Leah Hannaford & my son William Hannaford Extrs.  All my personal eatate, except my Negro girl Leah, to be sold & all the money to my children John Wise Hannaford, William Hannaford, Margaret Hannaford, Henry Hannaford, Sarah Hannaford, Joseph Hannaford, Anne Hannaford, James Hannford & Thomas Hannaford & wife Leah Hannaford.  My Negro girl Leah to be hired out for 10 years after my death, my son William Jr. to take my land upon paying $1,000 to my children (named above) & my wife.  Witt: Levin S. Joynes & George C. Revell.  Prob: Named Extrs. refused & Levin S. Joynes became the administrator with John G. Joynes. & George C Revell securities.

In 1815 William's land was noted:  "William Hannaford of John decd, estate: Onancock: 5 miles southwest of the Accomack the courthouse in Accomack Co., VA." (Ward 9).

3 ii. George Hannaford was born circa 1760.

4 iii. John Hannaford was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1770.

5 iv. Female Hannaford was born circa 1774.  She died before 7 April 1802 (Miles).  She married a Mr. Savage circa 1792.  He was born circa 1767.  Circa 1794 they had Abel Savage in Accomack Co., VA.

6 v. Sarah Hannaford was born circa 1778.  She married George Ironmonger circa 1796.  George was born circa 1770.  Circa 1798 George and Sarah had James Ironmonger in Accomack Co., VA.  Circa 1800 George and Sarah had Margaret Ironmonger in Accomack Co., VA.  Circa 1802 George and Sarah had Sally Ironmonger in Accomack Co., VA.  Circa 1804 George and Sarah had Catherine Ironmonger in Accomack Co., VA.   Circa 1806 George and Sarah had Ann Ironmonger in Accomack Co., VA.  Circa 1808 George and Sarah had Mary Ironmonger in Accomack Co., VA. (Miles 281).
