THOMAS B. BRADFORD

HOUSEHOLD 35

Thomas Baily Bradford, son of Charles Bradford and Naomi his wife, was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1753.  Thomas died before 25 September 1795.

He married Amey circa 1780 in Accomack Co., VA.  Her maiden name is unknown.  Amey was born circa 1762.

On 28 August 1765 his orphan's account was recorded by his mother, his guardian Naomi, (Orphans Accounts 94).  The text reads: "Thomas Bayly Bradford Debit To Accomodations and Cloathing a year £04.00.0.  Neomy Bradford Admin At a Court Contd and held for Accomack County August 28th 1765.  Neomy Bradford Guard to Noah, Jemimah, Thos Bayly, & Charles Bradford Orphans Presented and made Oath to the within Account agt Said Orphans & Admitted to Court."  These accounts run till 1769.

Thomas registered to pay taxes in 1787 in Accomack Co., VA (Yantis & Love 92).  The text reads: "Thomas B. Bradford charged with the Tax, 1 male over 21, 2 Black males under 16, 2 Horses, mares or colts, 1 cattle. Notes: tax free."

Thomas made a will on 1 September 1794 in Accomack Co., VA.  It was probated 25 September 1795 (Nottingham).  An abstract of his will reads:  "BRADFORD, THOMAS BAILY - 1 Sept. 1794 - 25 Sept. 1795 - To wife Amy whole estate during her widow to bring up my children, & at her death or marriage my lands to be rented out until my son Charles Baily Bradford arrive to lawful age, & the profits to be equally divided between my 3 children Bridget, Charles & Leah. I give my land to my son Charles Baily Bradford.  Witt: William Leatherbury, Daniel Richerson, William Trador.  In order of prob: Amy Bradford qualified."

Although Thomas had died before the date the procession was taken, his land was processioned in his name.  The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads:  "Eleventh District Decr 29th 1795 - Lines between Thos. B. Bradford & Polly Rodgers.  Lines Thos. B. Bradford & Levi Rodgers.  Lines between Thos. B. Bradford & John Hannaford" (Processioners Returns).  There was no witness named.

Amey married second a Mr. Chambers circa 1795.

Amy was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 9).  The text reads: "Amey Chambers 1 male 10-16, 2 femaels 0-10, 1 female 10-16, female 26 to 45."

Amy was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Accomack Co., VA (Powell 118).  The text reads: "Amey Chambers 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-18, l male 18 to 26, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 45+."

Amy made a will on 16 November 1826 in Accomack Co., VA.  It was probated 27 November 1826 (Miles 117).  An abstract of her will reads:   "CHAMBERS AMEY 27 November 1826 27 - November 1826 - To sons Daniel, John & Levin Chambers & my daughter Elizabeth Chambers, 1/5 each remaining 1/5 to grandchildren Mahala, Walter & Lavinia Scott, the children of my dec'd daughter Leah, None of the money to my grandchildren named above (all under age) should ever come to the hands of their father John W. Scott.  Friend Lewis L Snead Extr.  Witt: Levin L Joynes & Levin White.  Prob: George F. Snead & Thomas Snead securities."

Thomas Baily Bradford and Amy his wife had the following children:

1 i. Bridget Bradford was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1780.  On 25 September 1797 her orphan's account was recorded by her mother and guardian (Orphans Accounts 3).  The text reads: "Bridget, Charles and Leah Bradford Orphans to Amey Chambers - January 1794  To three years Board and Cloathing @ 160/per year for all three from January 1794 til January 1797.  By three years Rent for two thirds of the land @ 80/ per year. £12.00.0.  At a court held for Accomack County September 25th 1797 Amey Chambers made oath to the above account against Bridget Charles and Leah Bradford which was recorded."

On 24 September 1798 her orphan's account was recorded by her mother and guardian Amy Chambers (Orphans Accounts 91).  The text reads:  "Bridget, Charles & Leah Bradford (orphan of Thomas) To Amey Chambers.  Dr To board and Schooling for the year 1798 £08.00.0. Cr  By the rent of the two thirds of the land 06.00.0.  At a court held for Accomack County Septr 24th 1798 Amey Chambers made Oath to the above Accts and ordered to be recorded."

2 ii. Charles Baily Bradford was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1782.  On 25 September 1797 his orphan's account was recorded by his mother and guardian Amy (Orphans Accounts 3).  The text reads: "Bridget, Charles and Leah Bradford Orphans of Thomas B. Bradford to Amey Chambers - January 1794  To three years Board and Cloathing @ 160/per year for all three from January 1794 til January 1797.  By three years Rent for two thirds of the land @ 80/ per year. £12.00.0.  At a court held for Accomack County September 25th 1797 Amey Chambers made oath to the above account against Bridget Charles and Leah Bradford which was recorded."

Leah Bradford was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1785.  On 25 September 1797 her orphan's account was recorded by her mother and guardian Amy Chambers (Orphans Accounts 3).  The text reads: "Bridget, Charles and Leah Bradford Orphans of Thomas B. Bradford to Amey Chambers - January 1794  To three years Board and Cloathing @ 160/per year for all three from January 1794 til January 1797.  By three years Rent for two thirds of the land @ 80/ per year.  £12.00.0. At a court held for Accomack County September 25th 1797 Amey Chambers made oath to the above account against Bridget Charles and Leah Bradford which was recorded."

Amy, the widow Bradford and Mr. Chambers had the following children:

iv. Daniel Chambers was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1796.

v. John Chambers was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1797.

vi. Levin Chambers was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1798.

vii. Elizabeth Chambers was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1800.
