THOMAS UNDERHILL

HOUSEHOLD 9

Lieutenant Thomas Underhill was born circa 1745. Thomas died on 30 January 1797.

He married Susanna Evans on 14 November 1767 in Northampton County, VA (Marriages 115).  Susanna was born in Northampton County, VA, circa 1752.  She was the daughter of Arthur Evans.  The record reads: "Thomas Underhill to Susanna Evans 14 November 1767, daughter of Arthur Evans deceased, Edmund Galanville security." 

Thomas made a will on 12 July 1796 in Accomack Co., VA.  It was probated 30 January 1797 (Nottingham).  An abstract of his will reads:   "UNDERHILL, THOMAS, SR. - 12 July 1796 - - To wife Susannah whole est during her life, then personal estate to be divided between my then surviving children, Thomas Underhill excepted.  To son Thomas after his mother's death all my land where I now live.  Son Thomas Exr. Witt: John R. Parker, Kendall Ames, Levin Smith."

The Procession of 1795, as it originally reads: "Eleventh District Decr 29th 1795 - Lines between Thomas Underhill & John Parson.  Lines between Thomas Underhill & William Boggs."  (Walczyk).  Thomas did not witness the procession.  It is probable that William Kennehorn stood in for him.   SEE HOUSEHOLD 37. 

Lieutenant Thomas Underhill and Susanna had the following children:

2 i. Captain Thomas Underhill was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 7 December 1771 (Mihalyka, Graven Stones 278).  Thomas died on 8 April 1855 (278).  He married Nancy circa 1794 in Accomack Co., VA.  Nancy was born on 13 November 1783 (277).  Nancy died on 22 December 1856 (277).   The Accomack County death register reads: Underhill, Ann, w/f, 21 December 1856, in ACC, cause unknown, 73 yrs, born in ACC, wife of Underhill, Thos. Boggs, Jos. P., Head of Family, g/info. (Death Register).  NOTE: SEE HOUSEHOLD 1 FOR DESCRIPTION OF THE BATTLE OF PUNGOTEAGUE.

In Reuben Joynes' will Thomas was named by Reuben to handle his estate on 3 November 1785 in Accomack Co., VA.  The will was probated 30 June 1789 (Nottingham 382).

Captain Thomas Underhill gave security for the marriage of Francis Boggs and Elizabeth D. Underhill on 20 June 1811 (Turman 34).  In Francis Boggs' will Thomas was named by Francis to handle his estate on 1 March 1820 in Accomack Co., VA.  The will was probated 29 September 1823 (Accomack County Will Book, 1823-1824).

3 ii. Catherine B. Underhill was born in Accomack Co., VA, on 9 January 1780 (Mihalyka, Graven Stones 251).  Catherine died on 24 November 1853 (251).  She married Thomas H. Smith circa 1802 in Accomack Co., VA.  Thomas was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1777.  Thomas was the son of John Smith [A55] and Sarah Parker [A55].

4 iii. Sarah Underhill was born in Accomack Co., VA, circa 1785.  She married George P. Leatherbury on 8 September 1819 in Accomack Co., VA  (Turman 163).  The record reads: "George P. Leatherbury to Sarah Underhill sister to Captain Thomas Underhill on 8 September 1819.  Arthur R. Dunton security." George was born circa 1780.
