[A55] was patented in the name of Matilda Scarburgh by her father Colonel Edmund Scarburgh. She was the daughter of Colonel Edmund Scarburgh and Mary Cade (Upshur). She married John West, the son of Anthony West (Edwards). In 1690 John West reissued a patent for these 500 acres and 200 acres of new land. This land remained in the West family until 1756. (See Whitelaw p 814-818.) It was owned by two other people until 1775 when John Smith bought 300 acres and a windwill from Edmund Potter. NOTE: See household 1. Other owners in this area in 1795 were Branson Dolby (household 2), Susanna Phillips (household 3), her son Benjamin Phillips (household 6), Michael Parker (household 4), and William Crowson (household 5).
