Route 638 was once called the Pungoteaque Road - (Nottingham, The will of Charles Leatherbury).
Both Finneys Creek and Parkers Creek open up to one big mouth that leads to Onancock Creek. The two of them were once known as one creek. The southern branch, now called Parkers Creek, was called Batchelor's Branch. The northern branch, now Finneys Creek, was once called Spoon Branch (Whitelaw 825).
The Chesapeake Bay is no more than 200 feet from the end of Broadway. See Broadway Neck and the Chesapeake Bay.
Parker's Island is located at the mouth of the Matchatank. It was patented by John Parker in 1687. See Whitelaw p. 823.
Boggs Place has burnt down since the picture in Whitelaw was taken. See Whitelaw p. 822.
In the early 1800's the area known as "Crockett Town" was settled. It was first settled by Crocketts and other Islanders from Tangier. Still known by the same name today it is located where Route 638 meets Route 637.
In approximately 1810 Ezekiel Killmon came from the Back Creek Guilford area to settle in this area.
During the Civil War, many of the watermen living ran the Union Blockade. See "A Blockade Runner Returns Home" [link not functional] and "Skirting Trouble"[link not functional].
