Hancock Belote
Hancock Belote was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1784. He was the son of Hancock Belote and his wife Molly.
In
December 1799 his orphan's account was recorded by her guardian Mary
Belote. Hancock was of school age in December 1799 for besides clothes
there is an accounting for 2 1/2 Months Schooling at shillings 6 pence
(Walczyk Orphans 1798-1802: 70).
He married Catherine Watson
on 28 December 1809 in Accomack Co., VA (Turman Marriages: 25).
Catherine was born in Accomack Co., VA circa 1791. The marriage record
reads: Hancock Belote to Catherine Watson of Frederick 28 December 1898
William Danerald security. Hancock appears on the Pay Roll List of
Captain Captain Joseph Ames' Company of the second Regiment Virginia
Militia, Accomack County, commanded by Lieut Thomas M. Bayly, for the
years 1813 and 1814 as serving 1 month 18 days Militia in the War of
1812 Vol I: 308).
In the 1810 Census, Hancock is listed on page
6, in St. George Parish (Powell 1800, 1810, 1820: 56). The text reads:
BELOTE, HANCOCK, 1 male to 26, 1 female 0-10, 1 female to 16, 3 females
to 26. (Powell: 56). He does not appear in the 1820 Census (Powell
1800, 1810, 1820).
