[1814] Levin and Patience Laylor sold their interest in Lot No 10 in Onancock to James Ashmead. the deed stated it was the lot "whereon tavern is now kept." Whitelaw: 914).
In The Accomack Processions this area was included in District 12. This District was located from Tinleys Mill between the forks of Onancock up to the middle road. Edmund Wise, Garret Topping & Tully Snead Processioners. In 1816 the Procession reads in part: "March 23rd - Lines between Smith R. Carmine & Wm Seymour. Lines between Wm E. Wise & Wm Seymour. Lines between Thos R. Joynes' store lot & Smith R. Carmine. Lines between Thos R. Joynes' store lot & Jas R. Ashmead. Lines between Jas R. Ashmead & Tully Snead's heirs. (Walczyk Processioners: 205).
He married twice. He married Elizabeth Laylor, the widow of Teackle Jacob, about 20 November 1813. A license bond was obtained. Elizabeth was born Before 1792. Elizabeth died before 10 July 1822. Elizabeth applied for a marriage license to wed James R. Ashmead on 20 November 1813 (Turman: 11). The text reads:
James R. Ashmead to marry Elizabeth Jacob, widow of Teakle, Thomas R. Joynes security.
On 1 June 1824 the estate of Elizabeth Laylor was administered to James R. Ashmead (Miles & Miles Wills: 15). He married Nancy Minson about 10 July 1822. A license bond was obtained. Nancy was born circa 1807. Nancy was the daughter of Samuel Minson and Sally Joynes. Nancy applied for a marriage license to wed James R. Ashmead on 10 July 1822 (Turman: 11). The text reads:
James R. Ashmead to marry Nancy Monson, Severn Kellam security.
Nancy was listed as Helizir in the household of Joseph R. Ashmead in the 1860 Census in Somerset Co, MD (Barnes 1860 Census: 4). The abstract reads Joseph Ashmead 33, carpenter, 500 real estate, 100 personal property, Nancy 27, Mary 9, Sarah 7, Margaret 5, John 2, Helizir 75 (female.)
James R. Ashmead was the administrator of the estate of Elizabeth Laylor on 1 June 1824 in Accomack Co., VA (Miles& Miles Wills: 15).
On 30 January 1837 the estate of James R. Ashmead was administered to George P. Cutler. William S. Sturgis, & John D. Mapp Securities (Miles & Miles Wills: 15). James and Mary's son Joseph married Nancy J. Evans of Noah about 14 August 1849.

Francis was listed as one of James Isaac Moore's nearest neighbors on the 1870 Census in Accomack Co., VA [Tangier Island] (Accomack 1870 Census). The census states: James Moore 35, oysterman, Grace age 35, Cornelius 14, oysterman, Lloyd 12, oysterman, George 8, oysterman, John 6, oysterman, Margaret 4.
Francis was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in HH1662 [Tangier Island] (Accomack 1870 Census). Francis A. Ashmead 45, Elizabeth Ashmead 39, John W. Ashmead 16, George B. Ashmead 13, Andrew J. Ashmead 10, Jane Groton 14 Black.
