Last Will and Testament of Richard Ames 26 September 1834 - Transcribed by Gail M. Walczyk
In
the name of God Amen I Richard Ames of the County of Accomack and
Parish of St. George being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and
disposing memory (for which I thank God) and calling to mind the
uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such
worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with I give and
bequeath the same in manner following that is to say
Firstly
I desire that ll my personal estate be immediately sold after my
decease and out of the monies arising therefrom all my just debts and
funeral expences be paid.
Secondly I give to my son Shadrack Thomas or his heirs forever in Cash Eighteen Hundred Dollars
Thirdly
I desire all my lands (except the new grave yard and for that I [-----]
one fourth of an Acre as a burying place for the family) to be divided
between my three daughters Tabitha Ann, Charlotte Isabella, and
Lauretta Margaret in the following manner,
First I give to my daughter Charlotte Isabella all the land in the
South corner of my tract marked off by two lines of Lucust trees, the
one starting from the road leading to Pungoteague on the West side of
the farm and running Eastwardly along the bank of a ditch untill it
intersects with the other on the East side of the Grave Yard, running
Southward dircetly throught the field to the South line, together with
the houses thereon, also one third the woods called Hammock, and one
half the woods called Bar swamp and one half ot the cleared land
attached to said swamp to her and her heirs forever.
Secondly
I give to my daughter Tabitha ann all the Lands in the West Corner of
my tract marked off by the line of Locust trees above the farm, in an
Eastwardly direction along the bank of the ditch to the South Corner of
the Swamp called Hammock thence on the West side of said Swamp along
the edge of the woods in a Northeast direction to the lands belonging
to the heirs of John M. Ames, thence westwardly on the line to the
Pungoteague road, Together with one third of the Swamp called Hammock
to her and her heirs forever.
Thirdly
I give to my daughter Lauretta Margaret all the rest of my lands
embracing one half of Bar Swamp and the cleared land that attached One
third of the Hammock Swamp and all the cleared land East of the land
devised to my daughter Charlotte Elizabeth to her and her heirs forever.
Fourthly
Out of the rest of my estate if there be any suficiency of both real
and personal oarticularly disposed of, I desire that my daughter
Tabitha Ann be paid One Hundred Dollars and the balance if any there be
devided equally among my several children herein before named which I
give to them their heirs Exrs. Administrators and assigns for ever. And
Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son in law John D. Mapp
and Step Son John A. Ames Executors of the my last woll and testament,
hereby revolking all other or former wills or testaments by me
heretofore made In Witness wnereof I have hereunto set my hand and
affixed my seal this 26th day of September in the year of our Lord
Eighteen Hundred & Thirty four.
