Last Will and Testament of Thomas Hunt - 15 January 1700/01 - Transcribed by Frank V. Walczyk

In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Hunt of the County of Northampton being very sick and weak but of good and perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following;

Imprimus - I give and bequeath my soul into the arms of my all sufficient and Blessed Redeemer and Saviour Jesus Christ confidently believeing the resurrection of my flesh and all men else, and my body to the earth from whence it came to have a decent and Christian burial, and as to my worldly estate it hath pleased God to endow me with I order and dispose as followeth, my will and desire is that my just debts be first paid.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son John Hunt my house and plantation from my Southern line Northerly to a gut called, " Cherry Tree Gut" and from the head of the said gut to a line running to a mullberry tree and from that tree to a sassafrick tree by the road and from thence by a line of marked trees, to a marked hickory at the head of my land, which I have marked for bounds between my son John Hunt and my son Thomas Hunt containing six hundred acres (more or less) with the appurtences there unto belonging to have and to hold to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Hunt all the rest of my land Northerly that doth belong to me upon any account from the Cherry Tree Gut as by the line before mentioned to the sassafrick tree by the road and from thence by a line of marked trees to a marked hickory at the head of my land which I have marked for bounds between my said son Thomas Hunt and his brother John Hunt containing three hundred acres (more or less) with the appurtences there to belonging to have and to hold to him and his heirs for ever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Gawton Hunt two hundred acres of land lying on Broad Creek Branch upon the head of Mr. Thomas Harmansons land which said land I bought of Ralph Pigot as by a deed doth appear with the appurtences there unto belonging to have and hold to him and his heirs forever. I give him also two feather beds and bolsters and one Virginia rug his name wove in it and a pair of blankets, and all the cattle that doth belong to him now known to his mother and others, and two bay mares and a horse colt and two guns, a chain pot hanger, one iron kettle about ten gallons, two silver spoons, one pair of sheets and eight napkins, diaper and huckaback, one diaper table cloth and one iron spit and my desire is that he shall be at age at eighteen years.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my three sons John Hunt, Thomas Hunt and Gawton Hunt, four hundred and eighteen acres of land upon an island comonly called or known by the name of, " Hogg Island" with the appurtences thereunto belonging to have and to hold to them and their heirs forever.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Ann Hunt, two feather beds and bolsters, a worstered rug, a pair of blankets, one copper kettle and her riding horse named, "Button" and two Servants one named, Edward Loughlin, the other Rebecca Alphey during her widowhood and if she marrys or dies before they are free then my will is that my sons Thomas Hunt and Gawton Hunt shall have the said Servants.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son John Hunt my horse mill.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Hunt my hand mill.

Item - I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Ann Hunt during her widowhood the one half part of my plantation I now live upon besides her thirds of all the rest of my land and the use of the horse mill.

Item - My will and desire is that all the cattle that I have on Hogg Island shall be equally divided amoungest my wife and sons John Hunt, Thomas Hunt, Gawton Hunt and my daughter Frances Benthall.

Item - My desire is that a gold ring be bought of ten or twelve shillings price for my daughter Ann Pigot and all the rest of my estate that do or may belong to me only what is given in perticular. I desire it may be equally divided between my loving wife Ann Hunt and my son Gawton Hunt.

Item - I do make and appoint my loving wife Ann Hunt and my three sons John Hunt, Thomas Hunt, and Gawton Hunt my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament revoking all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made in confirmation where of I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal this 15th day of January 1700.

May the 28th anno 1701, Then the within last will and testament of Capt. Thomas Hunt deceased was proved in open court of the said county by the corporal oaths of Mr. Ralph Pigot, Edward Loughton and Margaret Nelson and approved and allowed of by the court as an authentic probate and ordered to be recorded.
